Question:
What is the role of social workers in the Department of Education?

Response:
I strongly advocate for social workers at every level of the DOE. There
should be at least one social worker in every school. In
addition, social workers should be involved in the policy making
process of the BOE, especially as it addresses issues of bullying,
harassment and discrimination. Schools need more appropriate, effective
and educational alternatives to suspension, expulsion or
criminalization of students. We need to meet the educational
needs of the whole student, addressing the causes of behavior, not just
the symptoms. We must support families and schools with the
resources and insights that trained social workers can provide.
