The Honolulu Advertiser Voter’s Guide Special Section
Candidate Questionnaire 2006
(words/maximum words permitted)
1. Why are you running for office?
As an advocate for youth and social justice, I believe that every child
has a right to quality education and the opportunity to experience
success. (25/25)
2.
Should the State offer pay bonuses to get the best teachers into the
neediest schools? Yes. If so, how much?
Enough to maximize educational opportunities for EVERY child:
special-needs, at-risk, average, talented and gifted
students. (15/15)
3. How should the DOE modify the new funding formula to more fairly distribute money to schools?
The “fair formula” debate is a red herring that pits school
against school. We need to refocus, unite and demand sufficient
funding for EVERY school. (25/25)
4. Should there be greater consequences on students who bully, including suspension and expulsion?
Are uneducated bullies better for our communities? They need more
effective, relevant and educational consequences, including
individualized tutoring and counseling. (20/20)
5. How many children do you have, and did they attend public or private school?
I have been a licensed foster parent to three children. All my children have been enrolled in public schools and DOE programs.
6. What’s the No. 1 education policy you’d work to pass in 2007?
Sufficient Funding: Reinvest Hawai`i’s $500+ million tax surplus into education. (10/10)
