Advocate on the Board of Education:

Kim Coco is committed to an efficient and proactive Board of Education fulfilling its kuleana to the people of Hawaii. As a Board of Education Member, Kim Coco will:
    ·advocate for maximizing educational opportunities for all Hawaii public school students,
    whatever their strengths and challenges may be
    ·utilize her critical analysis and creativity to provide innovative solutions and workable strategies
    ·help the Board of Education build working partnerships with other government offices,
    private businesses, community stakeholders, families, alumni and students.

Supporting School Administrators:

    ·Invest in campus infrastructure
    ·Provide schools with the resources to:
        -offer aggressively competitive compensation packages to recruit and retain great teachers
        -hire more academic advisors to support over- and under-whelmed students
        -hire non-CPS social workers to support counselors with logistical needs of students and families
        -increase kupuna involvement, following student classes from elementary to high school

Supporting Teachers:

    ·smaller class sizes, narrowing the student:teacher ratio (Click here to see related article.)
    ·free continuing education for teachers
    ·more supplies and resources for teachers
    ·more discretionary funds to cover classroom expenses
    ·compensation which reflects the importance of education to Hawaii (Click here to see related article.)

Supporting Students:

    ·invest in more computers and make them more accessible
    ·inspire intellectual curiosity by offering more interactive courses that require critical thinking and problem solving
    ·offer alternative learning opportunities
    ·encourage high school students to participate in the development of curriculum and courses

Supporting Families:

    ·provide outline of course curriculum and assignment schedule
    ·offer course overview classes to families
    ·increase family involvement in the classroom and campus
    ·support the enactment of a livable wage law for Hawaii's labor force to provide families more time with students
    ·outreach to families of first generation immigrant students in their primary language


Supporting the Arts in Schools:

Supporting Innovative Learning Environments:

    ·continue tracking the efficacy of Public Charter Schools and Magnate School Programs
    ·provide more support to charter schools with cultural curricula
        -more assistance in obtaining federal funding
        -more assistance in obtaining site infrastructure and resources
Supporting Higher Education and Career Development:
    ·offer more classes and integrated learning on college campuses
    ·offer scholarship writing as an English elective
    ·offer credit for internships (paid and unpaid) that cultivate a positive work ethic and on-the-job training
    ·offer pre-employment course on resume writing, interviewing, employment laws and protocols
